Created for Love: Multiple Views of Attachment Theory in an Anabaptist Context

This volume makes the case that we as humans are created for relationship and at the heart of those relationships is love. It brings together research in neuroscience, psychology, couples therapy, conflict transformation, philosophy and theology, and the environment. Each author brings his or her perspective on attachment theory and the power of this relatively new discipline to make sense out of an increasingly interconnected world. Each of these perspectives is further contextualized within the broad view of the Anabaptist community whose spiritual commitment to what it means to be human infuses the entire work.

This is not a book to be read lightly. Each chapter is filled with ideas that stirred my heart and mind, challenging me to reflect deeply on them. For example, Dan Siegel, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA, wrote that "the mind is an embodied, relational, and emergent process that regulates the flow of energy and information." I realized this was a very rich description that required me to start exploring my own understanding of the mind and of how these concepts related to one another. One more addition. He posits that the self emerges out of interaction with other people and so how we engage with one another directly influences not only our own experience but also that of everyone we touch.

Another example comes from John Paul Lederach, Professor of International Peace Building at Notre Dame University, who wrote, "How do we create meaningful conversation about things that matter?" At one level this is an abstract idea. However, he tells a story of working with Balu, a Nepalese leader of the Kamaiya community. Balu's community were bonded slaves. When they were set free they had no place to go. They found space in a forest but became "encroachers" and the forest dwellers demanded they leave. The issues here are immense. What is necessary to be truly free? Can different communities with conflicting interests choose to live together? How is it possible to engage in a dialogue beyond self-interest?

This book reminds me of the opportunity for healing and reconciliation that science, psychology, and theology bring resources to. The Early's write in their conclusion, "As we move toward health--the integration that creates wholeness in self and society--we need conversations that encourage greater embodiment in both concept and lived experience." This book did just that for me, it encouraged thoughtful reflection and the inevitable desire to find conversation partners that will explore this journey with me.

Serious consideration of the topics and issues raised in this book will change you. I do not believe it is possible to not be affected by the research, insights, and conclusions of this remarkable collection of authors.

About the Author
Maina Chawla Singh teaches at the University of Delhi. Her previous research has focused on gender and cross-cultural missionary work in colonial India. In 2008-9, Singh was Hadassah-Brandeis Scholar and Schusterman Fellow, Brandeis University. Currently she is affiliated with American University, Washington, D.C.

As an Indian Jew myself who emigrated to Israel in 1970 I as was surprised as to how accurately Dr. Singh has encapsulated the experience of the Indian Jewry in Israel. Dr. Singh has spared no pains in getting the Indian Jewry in Israel to speak openly about their experiences in India and in Israel, and in order to do so I am sure Dr. Singh had to work very hard at gaining the acceptance of the Indian Jewish community in Israel first prior to being able to do her research for the book. The book details the trials and tribulations that Indian Jews faced as part of their assimilation process in Israel. I applaud Dr. Singh's efforts and the accuracy of the experiences as she has denoted them in her book. It is already on my repertoire of books and I recommend it to all my friends everywhere who are either doing research on the subject, or anyone that wishes to enlighten themselves on the subject. I hope the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Diaspora Museum in Tel-Aviv and all Jewish museums worldwide carry this book.

Bringing visibility to the little known Indian Jewish Community

Dr. Singh's book is riveting in it's exposure of a little known community. The history of the arrival of the Jews in India, their different communities, where they settled and how well they were integrated makes fascinating reading. The varied reasons for their migration to Israel, their homeland, are well enumerated. Dr. Singh's research brings to light the cultural differences that made assimilation a different experience for each generation of the families, even though bound by a common religion. Detailed case histories show how Indian Jews integrated over time into their homeland, yet retained distinct aspects of being Indian. Individual profiles lead to a deeper understanding of the challenges faced, and how they were surmounted. The notes at the end of each chapter are a helpful reference. This book should be read by everyone interested in gender difference, minority studies, and the effects of migration.

Dr. Maina Singh's book is beautifully written! She has taken a subject that most are unaware of and has brought to light the challenges facing Indian Jews trying to assimilate in Israel. Each page holds your attention and engages your every thought. You sense their problems, yet not with anger, but with strength and commitment to being both Israeli with strong familial ties to India. Dr. Singh's book should be required reading for every University and College Jewish Studies program, Jewish reading groups, discussion topics in synagogues, and also for just those of us filled with curiosity and a desire to learn more about our Jewish homeland.

Failures of large financial institutions and sovereigns, leading to bankruptcies and dramatic bailouts have thrust counterparty credit risk heavily into the spotlight as the key element of financial risk management. The sudden realisation of extensive counterparty risks has severely compromised the balance sheets of banks globally, the health of global financial markets and state of the general economy. Understanding and managing counterparty risk and CVA (credit value adjustment) has become a key problem for all financial institutions.

Counterparty Credit Risk and Credit Value Adjustment: A Continuing Challenge for Global Financial Markets, Second Edition explains the history of the subject and its emergence as the key financial risk during the global financial crisis. The basics of counterparty risk management, including aspects such as potential future exposure, netting and collateral, are defined. Banks and other financial institutions have been developing their capabilities for pricing counterparty risk and these elements are considered in detail via a characterisation of credit value adjustment. Wrong-way counterparty risks are addressed in detail in relation to interest rate, foreign exchange, commodity and credit derivative products and regulatory capital for counterparty risk, including the recent Basel III requirements for CVA VAR is discussed. The implications of an institution valuing their own default via debt value adjustment (DVA) and funding costs (FVA) are also considered at length. The management of counterparty risk within an institution by a CVA desk is also discussed with the associated portfolio management and hedging of CVA described in full. Finally, the design and benefits of central clearing, a recent development to attempt to control the rapid growth of counterparty risk, is considered.

The first edition of this book has become a standard reference on the subject of counterparty credit risk. The second edition has been completely re-written to cover the recent extensive changes in theory, market practice and regulation and the new topics of risk-free valuation, funding considerations and Basel III capital requirements. The book is unique in being practically focused but also covers the more technical aspects. About the Author

Jon Gregory is an experienced practitioner in the area of financial risk management. From 1995 to 1997 he worked in the Fixed Income division of Salomon Brothers. From 1997 to 2005 he was with BNP Paribas and from 2005 until 2008 he was global head of credit analytics at Barclays Capital. Jon has published a number of papers and articles on risk management, credit derivatives and quantitative finance and is a regular speaker at international conferences. He was a co-author of the book Credit: A Complete Guide to Pricing, Hedging and Risk Management, nominated in 2001 for the Kulp-Wright award for the most significant text in risk management and insurance. He is currently a partner at Solum Financial based in London and advises a number of banks on their counterparty risk and CVA practices. He holds a PhD from Cambridge University.

Excellent summary

This is an excellent summary of the current thinking in Counterparty Credit Risk, including recent regulatory changes. It also includes explanations of CVA and DVA, and discusses the pros and cons of both. I've been in the field for some time and was looking for something for team members new to credit. This book is perfect.

There are few valuable points in this book. I ...

There are few valuable points in this book. I bought it based on a high Amazon rating it had. I would search more if I knew that then- 5 -star rating was really not reliable. I would not buy the book which does not equip me with a clear idea how to implement the knowledge it discusses. I am not sure you will know how to model incremental CVA or wrong way CVA after reading this book. While reading selected half of book I realized the reasoning used is not really solid. Even rather the basic concepts were purely explained. Usage of certain mathematical terms was not really clearly explained, etc. Honestly I miss more math language. Appendixes with formulae were rather incomplete, based on my standards. Prior to purchasing book I had no clue that it was written by a chemist. Jon does not have a Cambridge PhD in physics, financial engineering, math, or risk management, but theoretical chemistry. So keep that in mind, for it influences the language it is writen.

Well written book but Appendices not included in 2nd edition.

This is a very well written book covering the basics of counterparty credit risk and valuation adjustments. Unfortunately, unlike the 1st edition, the appendices which go into further mathematical detail are no longer included in the book. (There are PDFs available for download from the author's website but some are incomplete - e.g. Appendix 14 on FVA.)

I was so excited to see that this was finally available after so many years! It's only on kindle release but that's fine with me! This volume is open ended but has developments that are very satisfying. The art is beautiful the storyline is interesting with some good humor and character development . I do hope that there will be some way to continue the story! So happy!!
