Utter Gem, Should be Read with Sifry's The Big Disconnect

I bought this book at Hackers on Planet Earth (HOPE) in NYC, along with Michel Sifry's The Big Disconnect: Why The Internet Hasn't Transformed Politics (Yet) that I am reviewing now, both of these books are huge, and the Sifry book relatively unknown when it should a "top 10" reading for all progressives.

This book (Beautiful Trouble), at 138 pages in pocket size (3/5ths of a normal pocketbook), is an utter gem. At a minimum it forces reflection. Produced by a team of people and organizations, this is a community resources in every sense of the word.

By all means use Look Inside the Book, it does offer a Kindle version look at the contents, otherwise I would have repeated the table of contents here. This is an important book, perhaps most useful as an inspiration and as a source of reflection on what is possible. It is a book I will carry in my briefcase to visit across many days and places.

Here are some highlights from my notes:

+ Book offers a "pattern language," in essence a formula for telling a new story with new means
+ See the website, a growing community
+ Song creates sympathy
+ Coordination across organizations and industries is key -- most are fragmented beyond imagination
+ Debts are shared fictions - pull the plug
+ Winning the revolution is an information challenge -- challenge the core premises publicly
+ Flash mobs work well, especially under repressive conditions
+ Strikes are non-violent but only work when they are general and cross-industry
+ Guerilla projection (projecting truth messages against facades without doing damage) is HUGE tool
+ Hoax stories that get picked up by mainstream media reveal the larger mosaic of lies that is the mainstream media
+ Core practices include clear motive and story, disruptive action with disciplined non-violence, open to participation
+ Strategic non-violence demands DEEP education of all participants to avoid false-flag provocations to violence
+ Repressed female and minority power is a huge resource to be respected and embraced
+ Highlighting human (and true) cost of any issue is not something the media does -- we must
+ Play to your SECONDARY audience (the follow on viewers of the YouTube)
+ Shift the spectrum of allies from hostile to neutral to friendly to stalwart
+ Tell the story -- the "naked truth" is simply not that effective because the story grabs the heart and the heart is central
+ Message discipline is vital -- leave the conspiracy theories even if known to be true - for after the revolution
+ Listen to those most affected by the issue, let their authenticity be your foundation on that issue
+ Challenge the behavior in context, not the person -- everyone really is a good person trapped in a bad context
+ Most are ignorant of the power they can exercise by withdrawing consent and buycotting

A useful text book of Irish magical traditions

I really enjoyed this book and would consider it a very useful text book for anyone interested in Irish magic. My favourite chapter was the 'Historical context of Ogam' chapter which offers up an alternate perspective on the history of Ireland and gives many insights often overlooked in the conventional take on Irelands past.

Some chapters proved difficult without the expertise to fully understand them, like the chapter on the Irish wire strung harp and its relation to Ogam but I'm sure that this would be a gold mine of information for those with a musical background.

Overall, whether you have an interest in the historical, magical or mythical traditions of Ireland or indeed any particular school of majickal or esoteric thinking there will be something to gain from this book. One of the great things that the author portrays is that given some care and attention the ogam of our Irish ancestors will indeed become 'A living magical tradition.'

The Poets Ogam, like the work of the filid, or philosopher poets of the past, is a skilled example of both science and art, and it's contents take on two main forms;

Firstly it contains an indepth overview and review of historical Ogam research, presenting details of the original source material, and setting it in context by presentng an image of the environment and era wherein Ogam flourished and shedding further light on its roles by drawing parralels with similar sytems of thought and art in other cultures.This area of the work is incredibly well researched and comprehensive in scope.

The second section of the Book breathes life into the traditional Ogam material and demonstrates its contemporary role - both for structuring knowledge, and unleashing creativity. The author has applied the keys of Ogam, to areas as diverse as divination, the musical notation of the gaelic harp and Martial Arts and amply demonstrates its succesfull use and relevance to modern circumstances. Using the 'science' of historical and contextual investigation, to give life to the arts of inspiration and intution

This work combines the best of scholarship and creativity, allowing each to serve the other, yet always being clear as to the distinctions between original ideas, suggestions and speculations and historical and factual sources.

Anyone with an interest in Ogam, the fild, or the arts of magic and poetry in ireland will find this book invaluable.

The best of the "High-Yield" series

This book is perfect for USMLE review! Dr. Dudek has very carefully chosen his words and diagrams in this concise review. It focuses on commonly tested concepts on the USMLE, especially with regard to congenital malformations. Highly recommended.

I was a little dissapointed when going through this book for USMLE step 1 review. Don't get me wrong, it is a really good review of embrology. It's concise, well written, and digestable, but thats just it. There are numerous details in this book that really just aren't important for step 1. With the exception of fertilization, cleavage and early stuff in development, the majority of this book is just icing on the cake. The explanations of clinically relevant material are very high yield and excellent, but I found that I already covered all the material while studying for pathology. Plus there aren't any questions at the end of the chapter to help you review. I found that First Aid was more than adequate for studying embrology and this book just really wasn't needed. I would only recommend using it if you are taking embrology in med school and need some answers. This book can be a great source to help you make an "A" in class, and it is much lighter than the parent BRS embrology, which can seem a little overwhelming. Just as a side note, the Board Review Series Embrology has the exact same material as this book. If you have one, don't get the other!

John Kimble has 25 years of basketball coaching experience. Most recently, he served as the head boy s basketball coach at Crestview (FL) High School for 10 years. During Kimble s tenure, the team averaged almost 18 wins each season (excluding his first year at the helm). Kimble s extensive basketball coaching career also includes stints at Lexington (IL) High School, Deland-Weldon (IL) High School, Dunlap (IL) High School, and Central Florida Community College in Ocala, Florida. Kimble is frequently invited to speak at coaching clinics and camps, has written numerous articles that have appeared in various basketball publications, has written two well-received instructional books on basketball, and has been featured on several popular basketball DVDs. Kimble is currently teaching several business classes at Crestview (FL) High School, still studying the game, and still writing basketball articles and books.
