Living through death
By Cheryl A. Fuller
I have never lost a child, but I felt the pulse of loss through individual stories of these moms who have. At the right time, this little gem might be a lifeline to a grieving parent. I would think this book would be an anchor to any soul that needs to have hope.

If you write, you need this book.
By Victoria Tarrani
Readers and editors are over burdened with books, book deals, writers, publicity, and other aspects of their daily routine. They are expected to read manuscripts at home, so it is no wonder that to get through a large slush pile editors use the precedent: find reasons to reject manuscripts in order to go on to the next one.

This book does not teach 'how to write,' but how to avoid the mistakes that send your manuscript to the recycle bin. That is the craft of writing.

To be successful, you have to capture your audience in the first five pages. Noah Lukeman, a prestigious editor turned agent knows the secrets of successful writing. In reality, you must capture your reader in the first five words, sentences, or paragraphs with a strong hook and the good writing.

Lukeman arranged the chapters in The First Five Pages to show each process in rejecting manuscripts. Follow the steps, and if you are lucky, you might get a contract. Do not follow the steps, and the only reason your manuscript will reach the one person who can make a difference is through a fluke.

Each chapter concludes with write and rewrite examples and practices. The Lukeman way is included at the back of the book. The only way to become a better writer is to write. The following is only a brief synopsis of a few chapters.

Presentation: The number one reason aspiring writers get rejections is that the work is inappropriate for the market. Simply put: do not send a bodice-ripper, swashbuckling tale to someone representing coffee table books. Other problems are spelling errors, sloppiness, faded text, and dirty paper; they all indicate carelessness that is generally reflected throughout the book. Research your market, and prepare your manuscript according to the instructions given by the agent, editor, or publisher. If they want Ariel font, give it to them.

Adjectives and Adverbs: The next step to rejection is the overuse or misuse of modifiers. These words tell rather than show your noun. "If a day is described as 'hot, dry, bright and dusty,'" these words are tedious and the image becomes significantly unimportant. Overuse is very easy to spot by a cursory glance.

Sound: If your manuscript has reached this level, it is being read. Pacing, rhythm, meter, or beat is about the way your prose reveals the story. "Prose can be technically correct, but rhythmically unpleasant." Read your work aloud; if it does not sound right to you, pay attention.

Comparison: Analogy, simile, and metaphor can be overdone. I read about 1/3 of a book recommended to me as an excellent thriller. The plot, characters, dialogue, details, and descriptions were good. I could not read the book because everything is not like something else, and every paragraph or three included a simile.

Style: If the writing feels forced or exaggerated, or the writer began to showcase his words rather than the story, the probability of rejection is high. Another nit for me is redundancy; this is a matter of using the same or similar word in close proximity. It is also a reason for rejection.

I recommend two books to my clients or fledgling writers. This is one of them. THe other is Self-Editing for Fiction Writers: How to Edit Yourself into Print, by Renni Browne.

A Sharp Bite of Reality
By RoseDog.com
Noah Lukeman's portrayal of overworked editors looking for just one reason to shoot your beloved work into the rejection pile is a sharp bite of reality that some writers won't want to feel. Like it or not, Lukeman is bluntly asserting that most writers are rejected by agents and publishers because they simply can't pass first muster-and that the margin for failure is very narrow.
Lukeman's book is a gutsy reminder that success as a writer is hard won and that writing is a craft like any other and must be learned-the hard way. If (in terms of numbers alone) the odds are stacked against you each time an editor or agent opens your work - then all the more reason you should be as good a writer as you can. The critical, probing exercises found at the end of each chapter are likely to be valuable to writers not only because of the very practical way in which they are presented, but because they also have the virtue of supporting Lukeman's central conviction that writers can train their minds towards critical thought-and through critical thought comes better writing. New writers will pore over his exercises in detail, while more skilled writers will use them to throw new light on specific problem areas.
The glimpses Lukeman offers into the pent-up pressure within agent and editors offices, and the "read to reject" rule that prevails throughout the publishing industry also represent valuable insights into the context in which each writer's work is reviewed. And his frank assessment of some writers' abilities is obviously the result of having been on the receiving end of a lot of poor writing in his time. But while he is sometimes impatient towards writers Lukeman is never scathing, presumably because he seems genuinely to believe that anyone can train her/himself to be a better writer.
For this reason, although his stated objective is to help writers avoid the mistakes that will send them to the rejection pile, Lukeman is in fact offering a much larger opportunity to any writer who wants to seize it. He is offering tools to help train self-critical thought in the minds of those whose solitary activity can so easily steer them towards self-indulgence and uncritical acceptance of their work.
It's an excellent book and at such a reasonable price it's also a great investment.

Doesn't teach much about writing
By A Customer
If you know much about writing at all--if you've taken courses or published anything or read other good books-- this book probably won't be very useful to you. I was attracted by the title and the fact that it was written by an agent but got very little from it on WRITING--the most interesting aspect was that it was an agent's point of view and it told something about why manuscripts are rejected, but it was mostly obvious stuff I already knew. The whole first two-thirds of the book has pointers like don't have misspellings or a messy manuscript or use too many adverbs or draw on your manuscript or write grammatically incorrect sentences that are hard to follow. As other reviewers have noted, the examples are often blatant and laughable: they illustrate the obvious about melodrama and boring dialogue, for example--like, who wouldn't know, "I can't pay the rent. You must pay the rent" should be avoided?

What I, as a writer, need is more specifics and finer distinctions about what distinguishes good writing from poor,--more substance-- and this book taught me very little about that. Far better is SELF EDITING FOR FICTION WRITERS, by two professional editors who understand good writing and know how to give pointers and lessons on how to achieve it, or HOW TO WRITE A DAMN GOOD NOVEL, for an understanding on structure and drama vs. melodrama, or NARRATIVE FICTION, a classic textbook used in colleges around the country. I notice most the reviewers here who liked the book seem to be non-writers--i.e. the lawyer fraternity brother--or beginners who need to know to double space, use one-inch margins, and not write dialogue that is hard to follow. Unless you fall into one of those groups, you might be better off with another text.

Average Is Better
By Marvin P. Ferguson
From average to super hero is what this book is all about and I like it. Average people are important and make a difference in life. After all, God must have been in favor of the average person because He made so many of them. No body is too small to ever make a difference in life which makes this story easy for any reader to identify with. I'm intrigued by the events as they unfold, strongly recommend every kid read this book, and I'm Marvin P. Ferguson, author of The Unknown Baseball Player.

After the new coach makes Rob team captain, things get worse. They struggle to get along and work together as a team.

This book, "Soccer Hero," was awesome! Most of the time I didn't want to put it down. It's great for 8-11 year olds.

Great Book for my son!
By Soccer Mom of 2 boys
I got this for my son for his 10th birthday. He loved it and read it in about 4 days time! He had somewhat lost interest in reading so I wanted some new books to get him back in the swing. His passion is soccer, so we gave this one a try. We will be buying more of the soccer series and he also wants some of the hockey ones too!

Back when Ronald Reagan was president, it was considered scandalous that Nancy Reagan consulted psychics and astrologers to plan her husband's political decisions. How tame those activities seem when compared to world leaders who've been involved in the occult over the centuries, using witchcraft and black magic to take power and expand their rule. A historian of the occult sheds new light on the influence of groups such as the Gnostics, Sufis, Assassins, Druids, Templars, and other secret societies whose members have included British and French royalty and leaders in modern American governments. Little-known groups such as the Black Sorcerers, Friends of Hekate, and Zoroastrian Priesthood receive their notorious due, with photos of worship sites, ritual objects, and hidden documents.

About the Author
For nearly 25 years, Toyne Newton has been gathering information on and researching the extent and power of mystical organisations. His previous book, The Demonic Connection, exclusively revealed the existence of a secret order of occultists - after which stories began to filter through into the mass media. In The Dark Worship, he presents the full results of his findings in a unique body of work.

No conclusion and terribly researched
By A Customer
Toyne Newton's book had me intrigued in the first few chapters, although I've never in my life heard of this group he refers to as the "Friends of Hekate," and then I began to realize that this book has a huge bias slant against both witchcraft and occultism. I'm not even sure if he himself would be able to discern between the two if put on the spot.
Throughout the text he continuously refers to the persons he's investigating as "corrupt" magicians or occultists, and makes many references to witches being of the same stock. Yet it has been my understanding (please correct me if I'm wrong) that in the occult there are no good or evil forces at work, per se: there is only the flesh and the spirit. Newton accuses this mysterious Friends of Hekate of many things, associates them with figures from Europe's past, but with no evidence except his own assumptions, hunches, and the opinions of New Age psychics with what appears to be little or no formal occult or mystical training whatsoever.
The witches of Europe's past have been ridiculed and persecuted before and this book is a blatant smack in the face due to its lack of understanding. And as for the occult, of which I am a student, I think it would aid Toyne Newton to possibly research the occult and mysticism directly rather than reading other so-called occult researchers. It's like a bunch of frightened kids looking into a dark room through a little window, each sharing his or her own fears and building up this paradigm in their own minds of what it is, yet only seeing a little aspect of it and only from one perspective.
This focus on dark forces and "corrupt" magical and psychic work being done on ley lines and sacred sites in the United Kingdom, might it be difficult work to try to correctify the problems of the world? Perhaps because the shift is in work, from one aeon to the next, that it requires conscious effort on the part of those in the know? Maybe at the rate the human race is going it takes covert work, so fools like Newton don't begin the persecution anew? And if it feels so "malign" and evil to Newton and his psychic friends, I must wonder if they stopped to contemplate that because their energy perpetuates the age of the Kali Yuga (or Ragnarok), that anything new and different might appear frightening to them? With such closed minds, it doesn't strike me as odd that they would be afraid of the occult and the changes that educated people are trying to make, and because they allow their fears to manifest from the spirit world, through them, into this world, they take this stance of righteousness against evil because they feel their fears are justified.
At the end of the book, Newton ties in the Friends of Hekate, the occult, witchcraft, et cetera, with the conspiracy theories of extremist David Icke and tries to associate those he's pointed his finger at throughout the book with those of the Bilderburg Conference. I wonder if he never stopped to ponder that maybe there are occultists out there trying to stop those of the Bilderburg? It's media pawns like him that allow their fears to get the best of them and they publish scrap like this to promote the biased view.
Of course, this is only my personal opinion. I only finished this book so that I could honestly review it and not knock it only having read some of it.

An ostenatious title
By Christopher K. Halbower
This book is essentially a history of Hekate worship. The author delves deeply into the history of Hekate worship in all its various forms. Those of you interested in neo-paganism, this book gives a great deal of information on the mythology of this sect. The author's scholarship here is commendable and thus I gave him 3 stars.

However, the subtitle, "The Occult's Quest for World Domination" is a bit over the top. This title is a marketing ploy to catch people's attention (it got mine). The author's research into the mythology of Hekate is lucid; his case for a secret cabal trying to control the world is not. Newton claims that there exists a satanic cult that encompasses many prominent leaders in the U.S. and the U.K. but doesn't offer any details let alone any proof.

If you are looking for a book on the mythology and history of Hekate worship, along with modern examples of it, this book is fine. If you want a book that deals with the occult conspiracy to conquer the world, better tomes exist.

Statistical Mechanics: Volume 4 of Pauli Lectures on Physics (Dover Books on Physics), by Wolfgang Pauli

In the 1950s, the distinguished theoretical physicist Wolfgang Pauli delivered a landmark series of lectures at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. His comprehensive coverage of the fundamentals of classical and modern physics was painstakingly recorded not only by his students but also by a number of collaborators whose carefully edited transcriptions resulted in a remarkable six-volume work.
This volume, the fourth in the series, represents a concise course on statistical mechanics, centering on the historic development of the basic ideas and on the logical structure of the theory. Major chapter headings include General Statistical Mechanics, Brownian Motion, and Quantum Statistics.
Originally published in 1973, the text remains an important resource thanks to Pauli's manner of presentation. As Victor F. Weisskopf notes in the Foreword to the series, Pauli's style is "commensurate to the greatness of its subject in its clarity and impact. . . . Pauli's lectures show how physical ideas can be presented clearly and in good mathematical form, without being hidden in formalistic expertise." Alone or as part of the complete set, this volume represents a solid introduction to statistical mechanics that will be invaluable to individuals, as well as to libraries and other institutions.

A good introduction to statistical mechanics
By A Customer
Wolfgang Pauli really is an expert in explaining the not-so-simple subject of physics to not-so-bright students of the subject. This book is another proof of that. His unique style of using not too clumsy notation and of getting directly to the point (a feat that is hard to achieve in statistical mechanics that must be studied with lots of mathematical prerequisites) could magnetize even the ordinary physics student to read further the text. Studying statistical mechanics, like other fields in physics and mathematics, bears fruit only when reading is accompanied with papers and pen for tracing the computations in the text. But with Pauli's statmech book, calculations with papers and pen can be minimal. In fact, mental calculations can simultaneously go with reading. The reader is properly introduced to the subject because of the simplistic arguments found in the introductory parts, especially the specific topics of billiard ball problems and central forces. The whole chapter under Brownian Motion makes the book independent and the subject very well understood. Historically, ideas in statistical physics was formed due to the inability of classical mechanics to explain the irregularity of motion of dust particles suspended in air or water. The only, but only slightly, "dirty" character of the book is the too early introduction of the subject of quantum statistics due to inadequate presentation of various experimental indications leading to the subject. The book would be a perfect one had Pauli discussed first experiments around the topic. But as an introductory book that inadequacy could be ignored. Generally, the book is good.

Great deal!
By Sergio F.
This is a short and light book that addresses the main subject clearly and concisely and, at various points, brings some different foci than those often dealt with by reference books. It worth have all six books of the serie. In addition, the book arrived within de estimated delivery time and in excellent condition. I recommend!

Absolutely beautiful!
By catlover
I found this little book to be of such practical help as a supplement to my daily devotional reading and prayer time. It has many insights and observations based on four or five biblical stories that added so much to my understanding of God's love and how to better seek the presence of Christ in our daily lives. It appeared to be off-putting at first with its rather archaic wording, but as I read it, I found that to not be the case at all. It was very readable and still so timely today in its message. It is chock full of wonderful insights and reminders from a writer who had obviously spent a lifetime of reflection on scripture and on formulating ways to best share his reflections. A jewel of a book.

This book was very detailed and had a deeply profound affect on me. I realized that being a true Christian really relies more on my faith in Christ then in my actions.

A bit dry but some worthwhile thoughts
By Younggrandma
I found the older style English a bit difficult to understand, but there were some interesting and thought-provoking thoughts for those who are mature Christians.

Very good choice for a textbook
By J. Brantley
Students new to Philosophy and to Ethics could use a good model for reasoning. In an age in which the idea of "debate" has devolved into split-screen, partisan spin-wrangling, new scholars can be at a disadvantage.

Perhaps the main advantage of Moral Philosophy, then, is that Emmett Barcalow provides quite a good model of philosophical reasoning. In most chapters, Barcalow takes students on a logical walk through the issues. Though Barcalow's own inclinations are discernable, the goal of the textbook is clearly to get students accustomed to asking themselves the question: "What if I thought about this from another angle?" The tendency to ask such questions is a philosophical skill, and finding a textbook that can get that skill downloaded into students' minds is rare.

One of the ways Barcalow accomplishes this task, is to diligently ask students to consider each issue through the lens of moral theories they learn about at the beginning of the book. Any given moral issue chapter finds Barcalow laying out some of the major questions and concepts important for understanding why the issue is controversial. Closer to the end of the chapter, the author then asks what particular moral theories might say about the issue.

Barcalow does not always hit the mark when applying theory to issue. However, the consistent use of this approach in the chapters provides an excellent teaching tool and serves as a platform for discussion.

Partially reflecting the technique used in the chapters is the overall structure of the book. The first seven chapters lay out a landscape of ethical theories and considerations. Utilitarianism, Religion, and Egoism, for example, each receive their own chapters. The second half of the book is devoted to moral issues to which the theories apply, for example, feminism, crime and punishment, racism, and war.

In the theoretical chapters, Barcalow does an excellent job of both introducing the perspectives and ideas that motivate the theories; but he also takes them to task. Once again, he exemplifies the approach of thinking critically while developing understanding. There are, however, two awkward aspects about the way Barcalow incorporates theory into the book.

First, in the issue chapters, Barcalow usually only applies three of the moral theories discussed in the first half of the book: Utilitarian, Kantian, and Virtue Ethics. Clearly, these theories are some of the most talked about in contemporary ethics, but they are not the only ones. In fact, Barcalow's choice not to include the Libertarian, autonomy-based outlook as one of the main contenders smacks of omission. Further, in a pedagogical sense, students may get the impression that "all that theory stuff" discussed at the beginning is not relevant to sorting through moral issues, since not much of it plays a part later in the book. Since they are left out of other chapters, lessons supposedly learned early on in a semester (like what is wrong with relativism) can sometimes be forgotten by the time a student confronts a moral issue where s/he might apply those lessons.

A second problem with the structure of the book is that despite a promising start, there is very little use of the technique of evaluating arguments in the book. The first thirty pages include ample detail about the standard philosophical tools of arguments, premises, validity, and all that. It is somewhat surprising, then, that these structuring techniques are scarcely employed throughout the rest of the book. Practically no position in the issues chapters is ever presented in premise-conclusion form. Those issues do receive critical analysis, as explained above. However, the book would have been better if Barcalow had treated at least some of those issues by honing-in on problem premises in actual arguments. Otherwise, I fear, students come away with a less precise sense of particular issue positions.

"Limitations of space" is not an adequate excuse for perpetuating these omissions in future editions. Indeed, in a couple of the issues chapters, Barcalow sometimes appears to be filling space instead of confronting the philosophical issues. Why, for example, do we need six pages essentially describing the history of feminism, rather than more substantial discussion of its deeper issues? Why a four-page verbatim presentation of the U.N.'s "Universal Declaration of Human Rights?" There is ample room, here, to focus more on reasoning than on inessential facts.

Those considering using this book as a textbook, however, would do well to realize that these drawbacks of the text are easily offset by perspicuous course organization. A lecturer could provide the missing arguments in class. Class assignments and tests can make up for the missing applications of theory to issue. Moral Philosophy is good enough so that an instructor's attempts at compensating for the text are at least not hobbled by a lack of clarity or organization in the text.

One of the things I loved most about studying philosophy was the multiple ways one ...
By N. Olson
I purchased this book for my sister as it was required reading for an Ethics class she was taking at her community college. I had recently graduated with a Bachelors in Philosophy as a second major from a 4 year university, and because of my background, she asked me a lot of questions and asked me to review her work. While helping, I discovered that many of the arguments and lessons were extremely biased to a specific interpretation. One of the things I loved most about studying philosophy was the multiple ways one could approach a topic. My professors in college also had their own ideas about interpretations, but also wanted each student to develop their own options using reason. In this book, the authors objective seemed to be telling you what to think rather than how to think and form your own conclusions. Additionally, I was rather shocked to find that a sizable chapter on Utilitarianism mentioned John Stuart Mill only in a small footnote as "additional reading". As an introductory book for a student who has no further interest in Moral philosophy outside of filling a course requirement, this book will suffice. For a serious student of Philosophy though, I'd recommend a different book.
