George Lundskow recently edited and published a book on new developments in religion. This textbook is in many ways an extension of that book conceptually, that religion today is best understood through example, examined closely, not through summaries of classical theorists, literature reviews of famous scholars, or abstract concepts. Rather, let’s present students with interesting, factual information, relevant concepts, and let them critically analyze what is happening and why.

A review from someone who actually read the whole book

As someone who made it past page three, I can say that this book is pretty fantastic. It approaches religion from a sociological perspective. About half of any given chapter explains historical examples of the topic being discussed, whether it's emergent religions, cults, alternative religions, etc. The remaining half of the chapter usually explains the concepts academically. At its heart, the book explains what spirituality and religion can do for their practitioners, and at what levels they can do it. Fantastic book. Very accessible, very educational. Don't trust someone to review a book if they haven't made it past the first chapter.

Puerile Premise for the Whole Anti-Intellectual Affair

Thank the Deity that there are some real highlights in academic study of religion, like Charles Taylor, because otherwise it would be a very depressing wasteland of half-baked thinkers. And it would make one despair of the entire field. There is a strong need,seemingly, in these wobbly minds to shore-up an essentially anti-intellectual approaches, so that they so not have to get too specific historically. And one suspects that lurking underneath is the need to leave a conceptual space of non-criticism for some view of religious matters that does not need a salutary check by delimitable facts. That this book falls into this category is clear right from the start, in the most egregious way, on p. 3: "[Spirituality] exists as a feeling, rather than as an observable pattern of behavior or set of beliefs." Well, this is one of the most ridiculous things I have from an "academic" in a long time, and as someone specializing in religion, completely unconscionable. First, it is simply false in human religious history that various spritualities, be they group or individual, are not characterized by quite analyzable patterns of belief, pattern of cultural behavior, and even using past personal documents like letters and literary works, a very definable ethos, capable of being limned with precision. What this blowzy thinker Lundskow here wants is to stake out some realm where he can speculate with no real historical checks apparently. Only historical anecdote or opinion that fits what he wants to say anyways. How tedious. Yuck! Second, as a more contemporary matter, this contention is also very faulty, but its fault seems to have a cryptic, polemical purpose. For logically if "spirituality" has in this man's stated premise only "feelings", and nothing regularly observable then what he can only be basing this on is, again logically, some special sense he personally has, even if he flowers it up with anecdotal facts and historical referents, which predictably, he seems to have done. There is some zone in his theorizng which will be uncheckable by historical referent at all, for that is his very state premise, and even purpose! Most sadly, what is most wrong with this effort from the start, is only discernible with rather concentrated philosophical reasoning, and thus outside the bailiwick of the Amazonian jungle surely. Still, it is worth pointing out that the in fact a kind of direct, patternless, beliefless and behaviorless state (Zen, Meister Eckhart) is something that some great mystics have alluded to. But that is quite a rare thing by definition, and may be often lost in translation as commonsense would tell us. And even with these special tendencies, there are very strong traditional patterns. Ironically, the puerile premise adduced here actually precludes the possiblity of a real phenomenology of such rare experiences because it has, in blunderbuss fashion, construed general "spirituality" in such a unspecifiable (historially) way. I do not have the stomach to read books like this. If I saw in the sale bin at a book store, the first few pages would make me realize it is a perfect piece of pure vanity.

Alexander Orakhelashvili (LLM Leiden, PhD Cantab.) is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Birmingham. He previously taught international law in the Universities of London, Oxford, and Cambridge. His research includes all areas of international law. Not whole foods based.

No pictures and boring to read. Uses canola oil, veg oil, agave, white sugar, bread, penne pasta, ketchup, fat free flour tortillas, all-purpose flour, bread crumbs, whole grain hamburger buns, and uses g as unit of measure. Not whole food based. I wish someone had given a better review of the books contents. Small book no page numbers so I can't say how small.

He has a poor understanding of the doctor's book and while he is ...

This is one of the most poorly written books I have ever read. Be aware and pay attention. If you use these recipes you need to know this persons background and why he is using such things as honey and agave.....
This book reminds me of an adolesant school project.
1. The pages are not numbered.
2. The author has borerline- plagiarized
the diet portion of Dr. Raphael Kellman's book The Microbiome Diet.
3. I saw no publisher, address or contact.
4. For so few words written by this author, the writting was awkward with numerous typos and words left out.
5. The ending of the book asks for an amazon post..very unprofessional.
6.Who is this author? There are no credentials such as M.D., N.P. This person is not a nutritionist nor nutritional consultant. There was no bio to tell me of his background and why he is qualified to write this book.
7. He has a poor understanding of the doctor's book and while he is saying to use Lakanto to sweeten in phase 2, the recipes have honey and agave in them...with no explanation.
8. The back of the book has no reccomendations from people in this microbiome field nor his picture.
9.There was almost no research mentioned (x3) and no way to authenticate it.
10. Be careful if you are obese or diabetic.

Though not a popular as other diets out there, Microbiome is a healthy diet option that one should try out. This book gave me some good insights into what exactly Microbiome diet is, how to plan this diet out and loads of recipes that I can try out to make this diet plan work. This diet takes into account the good bacteria in the body and the book explains in detail about it. If like me you are new to this diet, it provides easy step-by-step information about all the three phases, what you should eat and what you should avoid and all this is then backed by about 50 recipes designed for the three phases of the diet. If you are planning to lead a healthy life then this healthy diet is a must to try.

A most excellent book

The illustrations are awesome, there's a universe of beautiful complex lifeforms that are too small for us to see. The illustrations are all in color, unlike other versions of Ernst Haeckel's prints, and it also has lots of text in the front about Ernst Haeckel's work, an autobiographic timeline in the back etc... Unbelievable art

Beautiful book! Highly recommended.

This is such a lovely book, I just HAD to let all you readers know. I didn't know anything about Haeckel (never even heard of the man.....), when I ordered this book. I just loved his drawing of the Medusa on the cover, and couldn't resist buying it, and boy, am I glad that I did..... There is such a quiet beauty in these plates.

The book is also published by Dover (see my review there), without any accompanying text (apart from a short publishers's note), and with all the plates printed in black and white.

In this book, many of the plates are printed 'in color' (either different hues of one color, or a color scheme based on two colors). The book also has a highly informative article on Haeckel and his times, and on those that were influenced by him.

I find it very hard to explain what exactly makes these plates so wonderfully beautiful. It is partly the symmetry of their composition, and the way in which they render the beauty of nature. The article in the book itself describes it very well:

"What is it that Haeckel depicts here that is so beautiful? It is the beauty of ornament. The forms illustrated in these pages seem to fit seamlessly into the repertoire of Art Nouveau forms. [........] Haeckel's approach did not determine Art Nouveau, instead Art Nouveau's approach determined Haeckel's. Bottom line is that this book is a MUST READ!

Block Party 5K1 Book Two by Al-Saadiq Banks picks up right where book one left off and again there is a major adrenaline rush filled within these pages. I thoroughly enjoyed both books, but book two definitely brought everything full circle and the a lot of questions were answered and there many OMG moments that had me anxiously awaiting to see what was going to happen next. What I enjoyed about this series was that this story was set in modern day theme and it made the story line that more enjoyable for me. I read all of the stories in this series and what makes Al-Saadiq different as a writer is because he is emotionally connected with these characters and they are extremely well developed to the point that the dialogue and verbiage are on point, everything is true to life. Bottom line is that this book is a MUST READ!

All hail the king (again)

Just when you think Mr. Banks has done it all, he delivers again. 5k1 is the quintessential street book that vividly captures the tone of the streets today. The Mayor - one of the BEST characters in ANY series- is nearly outdone by the Black Charles Manson. In book two, he lives up to his name! You see why he's so feared. The international twist is a pleasant surprise too, as it deals with a very real social issue. All in all, Mr. BANKS shows why he is the king of this lit s***!

What you didnt get, you won't.

I can't say so much about 5K1, however I will only say you have to read it.

Everyone is trying to eat, however The Black Charles Manson is not TRYING TO SHARE!
If you didn't get it before he got out, you wont get it now.

I can honestly say reading Al-Saadiq novels since NO Exit he didn't leave one stone uncovered in this installment of Block Party.

Absolute great read from start to finish, you wont be disappointed at all.
