All you need to know about the Revolutionary War

Couldn't put this one down once I started reading it. Detailed without becoming tedious, and with extracts from letters by the people who actually fought the war. If you have always wondered how it was won and why, and where it was fought, this is the book you want to read. Covers the important battles in the North, and even better, the battles in the South. This is good stuff, read it and enjoy.

Great Resource For Study of the Revolution

Most books on history tend to be dry, detailed narratives. This book brings the story of the American Revolution to life through first person accounts of the experiences of men and women from both sides of the conflict. These first hand accounts give the reader a real sense of what the participants thought and felt at the time the events took place. I highly recommend this book.

This book by far is one of the most detailed books on the revolutionary war you will find.George scheer does a great job of keeping you in the mindset of the early american people and battles.His research is remarkably accurate. This book comes close to Joseph Plum Martins private yankee doodle. Oh by the way Martin was there at most of the major battles and encampments. Private yankee doodle and this book are two books you will not put down once you start reading them

About the Author

Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821 1881), one of nineteenth-century Russia s greatest novelists, spent four years in a convict prison in Siberia, after which he was obliged to enlist in the army. In later years his penchant for gambling sent him deeply into debt. Most of his important works were written after 1864, including Notes from Underground, Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, and The Brothers Karamazov, all available from Penguin Classics.

Good book, hard read

Dostoyevsky is a classical Russian author. His words are deep as well as dark.

At times this was a difficult read. Other times I followed easily.

He makes his mundane, almost impoverished life leap from the pages. Satirical and poignant language that really makes the reader think.

Well done.

a painful, beautiful tragedy

This book captures the ramblings of a disturbed mind in a disturbed world. The vanity and self loathing of the narrator express unspoken thoughts and feelings that we can all relate to on some level, mostly by introverted, reclusive individuals prone to over-thinking and self analysis through a negative filter.

Experience the Iliad again for the first time

I have read many transltions of the Iliad and taught selections from it at the university level, but this is something different. With the narrative stripped away and the deaths and similes foregrounded, the poem is much shorter and even starker than the original. Oswald explains the differences in how she treats the two aspects of her version, and there's a concluding essay by Eavan Boland that highlights the technique Oswald uses of repeating the simile sections. I will read this intense and moving version many more times than once.

Brilliant idea done brilliantly

Alice Oswald has written a fabulous "version" of the Iliad as interesting as Christopher Logue's reworkings. This long poem is a series of death scenes, some just one line long, followed by an apt simile, so that every human war death is illustrated by some natural occurence, often involving predatory birds or the ocean. Oswald's frame, an opening listing of names emulating war memorials and a closing series of twelve similes, is inspired. My review at poetsandwar.com goes into more detail, but anyone who enjoys Homer should find this distillation a remarkably moving work. Brilliant imagery.

I don't mean that she is the greatest poet writing

Alice Oswald may be the most exciting poet to appear since the days of Pound and Eliot. I know that's a large claim, but I've been an avid reader of poetry for over 50 years and haven't heard a new voice of this force in all that time. I don't mean that she is the greatest poet writing, as there are great poets who use less rhetorical lines, writers such as W.S. Merwin, Gary Snider, Wendell Berry and Robert Bly. But Oswald has recaptured and re-invented the kind of large, world-shaking and world-shaping poetry that Pound and Eliot brought forth. It's amazing that her work, winning laurels in England, is so little known in the U.S. and I urge lovers of poetry to do something about that. Read her, and spread the word.

An original and novel work with just a few minor problems, would be appreciated by even those knowledgeable in the field

Many, if not most, multi-hundred page books published by Osprey publishing tend to be compilations of previously published Osprey books as opposed to being original works. Hence the first that should be said is about the book is that it is not compilation of previously published Osprey publications on German armour. Instead it is a new original work. This book, like so many Osprey publications (especially the older ones), is also not just a regurgitation or summary of previously published secondary sources. The author, Thomas Anderson, is fluent in German and has made very good use of his German through his very extensive use of original German language sources contained in the US and Germany and only relatively minor use of secondary sources.

In a nutshell the book is primarily about how german armoured doctrine developed over the pre-war and early war period, at a relatively high level (strategic and operational as opposed to tactical), organizational structure of panzer units (from divisional level down to platoon) and development over the same period, how the physical characteristics of the vechicles developed and a history of early war armoured battles (again, at a high level strategic and operational level as opposed to tactical level). Much of this discussion is based, as previously mentioned, on original German language documents. Hence it is not a rehash or synopsis of previously published material. It is very nice to see, for once, a novel discussion of german armoured doctrine, organizational structure, vehicles and battles. One area the book is particulary strong ,regarding novelty, are the many photographs. A very large number (but not all) are new and have either never or rarely been published before.

The book does suffer from a few weaknesses that prevent it from being worthy of five star rating. One is that, considering the discussion of vehicle's physical characteristics, there are no cut-aways or other illustrations showing the interiors or exteriors of vehicles. Related to this, it would have been nice to see comparative illustrations between German vehicles and those of England, Poland, France and the Soviet Union to better show the similarities and differences between these vehicle's physical characteristics. Another weakness is the lack of maps to discuss how campaigns progressed at the strategic and operational level. Very ironic given the space the book uses to discuss strategic and operational actions. Unfortunately this lack of comparison and contrast also extends to many other areas such as individual tank crew training for example (Germany made great efforts to insure that tank crews were trained together as an integral unit and were kept together as much as possible while other nations did not). A third problem is that organizational structures between Germany and other nations are not compared.

Despite these problems the book is still very original and novel. It is one that even those who are fairly knowledgeable in this field would probably appreciate and value. Four stars.

Exciting Page Turner - Humorous and Touching Real Life Story

I'm not a voracious reader but I read this book in two sittings. I had to put it down for a week, due to other obligations, during which Caroline was constantly on my mind.

I highly recommend this exciting page turner. I have to admit, I was a skeptic. Running off to Europe has never entered my mind when life has gotten rocky. But who hasn't wondered, just how did I get here and where is that young vibrant person I was before all my current attachments and obligations. How did this happen. Well, Caroline has history in Europe so that made perfect sense. As a lover of memoirs this story did not disappoint. Every step, thought, feeling and event was absolutely believable, yet amazing at the same time. I laughed, I cried, I worried and I cheered. Caroline revisits who she was, and examines who she has become. She rediscovers passions left behind while rediscovering a passion for her current life.

​I recommend reading other reviews, some written by authors themselves, if you are not convinced this book is worth your time. (Good Reads). Reviews so eloquently written that I enjoy reading them just for the shared enjoyment of the story. "Yes that's what I thought too" !!!

One more thing, I read the book on Kindle and went back purchased the paper back. It's a beautiful large paperback. I'm so happy to add this book to my bookshelf and it's a steal at $12.95.

wonderful adventure

There were so many aspects of this book that I fell in love with. First, I identified with the main character. I also have a terrible passion for traveling but have not been able to do much traveling lately. Just like Caroline, I am absorbed with taking care of my family and put my needs behind. I lived vicariously through Caroline and her story. I sympathized and empathized with her and her need to re-establish herself as a woman, mom and wife. I loved the very human and real interactions that these characters had with one another. They felt like real people living real lives and I was witnessing them on their journey. I found the authors writing style to be so engaging that I lost track of time and delved into Caroline and her family’s world. That this story takes place in France was the icing on the cake. I’ve visited France many years ago, and plan to go back. The author’s vivid descriptions made me feel like I was back in France and seeing it all again.
Aside from relating to Caroline and her station in life, I thought that she was such a great character. She was complex and imperfect and very human. Aspect of this story felt like “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert and “Wild” by Cherly Strayed. Just like these women, Caroline had to find herself and her way. There definitely many bumps in the road but she was ultimately able to achieve her identity. I highly recommend this book to really anyone. Anyone that loves to travel or anyone that has had the yearning to find explore and find. I wanted to hug Caroline and cry with her! This was a fantastic adventure filled with laughter, sadness and fulfillment.

When Carolines husband splits leaving her alone with their three kids.Caroline picks herself up and heads for Europe and her own adventures.This is a wonderful travelogue a portrait of a strong woman who deals with what life hands even while parenting&homeschooling&amazingly finding romance.Caroline is someone you will admire&cheer for. A wonderful read.
